Westside Summer Festival

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Today was the Westside Summer Festival in Lansing. The festival had live music, kids games, give aways, and loads of fun. We wanted to attend so we could watch little D's kindergarten teacher sing in her band called "Summer of Sol". First, we got our faces painted, visited the health tent, and did a bike rodeo. Then, we headed to the stage to hear "Summer of Sol" play. Little D's teacher has a really awesome jazz band. Little C and I danced the afternoon away while little D and big D sat and enjoyed the music.

Good Times,

Cousins

July 22nd - July 24th, 2009

I picked my nephews M and J up in Holland today so they could spend some time with us. When we arrived home little D explained to M ....quote "I have a little big bike that is medium" straight from the mouth of babes. Gotta love them. Then J and Z got the video games out. It was fun watching the four of them (Z,J,M, and little D) giggle and getting excited playing PS2's Smack Down vs Raw. The next day we took the kids to Hunter's splash park and zero depth swimming pool. It was a little chili if you got out of the water, but the kids didn't care until they found the outdoor shower with hot water. I tried to climb the rock wall but it was too hard especially since I had a bum arm. After the pool big D and I took Z,M,J, little C, and little D to the play ground area. We ended our fun time with a swim in our pool on Friday and a trip to Grandma S's for dinner.

VBS - 2009

July 21st - July 24th, 2009

The theme for VBS this year was Lifeways' Boomerang Express. Church had a mini pep rally after Friday's service and it was very special to see the kids do the dances/songs they learned during the week. Little D got a prize for bringing her two cousins M and J to vacation bible school. I recieved a TON of praise from the teachers in cousins J's 2nd grade class about Z. Mrs. Teacher said Z was very helpful and really good with the kids. I am so proud of you Z and thanks for volunteering to help at church.

Theme Song:
by Jillian (6th grade)
On the boomerang express,
it all comes back to Jesus
So we should all act good 'cause
we know he sees us
Our God is so mighty,
so loving and great
He gives us warm shelter
and food on our plates.
Say a prayer,
does not matter where;
and he will tak yo
into love and care
So follow your Lord
in heaven above
And give him respect
and a whole lot of love.

Trinity's VBS had 660 students attending this year.

Z gets 6 stitches

Tuesday, July 14th 2009

So...hmmmm. What a way to end the day. The story according to Z: While playing at the pool he put his finger in a broken window (located in the pool area) to see why it only broke in one panel (whatever that means) meanwhile his friend decided to open the window. Finger + Broken Window = 6 stitches! To the hospital we go. The ER waiting time was 3 hours and I wasn't willing to wait that long so we decided to go to Urgent Care instead. Z asked the doctors how many stitches he has given in his career(I think he was a little nervous). The doctor said he has been practing for 25 years. So, I asked him how many he gave in a week and he stated a couple a day. Yikes.. there must be a lot of teenage boys out there.

The girls and I went to Warren Dunes State Park in Bridgeman, MI today. It is my favorite state park on Lake Michigan. We had a glorious time playing in the river that runs into the lake. The waves were massivie just like I remembered as a kid. I decided that the girls were going to walk up the dune. I wasn't sure if they would make it but they did. Half way up the dune they wanted to quit and I explained that our family doesn't quit. We took a little rest and then pushed on. They did GREAT and it only took us 20 minutes to make it up the hill. Before little D and I made it to the top little C was already on her way down. Little D asked me if I was going to spank her butt, I was pretty mad but really didn't want to go down and get her and then walk up again. Finally, she stopped running down and worked her way back up. Little D and I just sat and watch while she huffed and puffed back up. When she reached the top we all sat in our glory of triumph. Sometimes, I completely under estimate my 4 and 5 year olds. It took us under a minute to run down. Just before we reached the top little D said she didn't want to walk the stupid hill but after running down she realized how wonderful it was. So happy that she is excited to walk the dune again some time. We went back to beach and jumped into lake Michigan without hesitation. The lake was very refreshing. Can't wait to go again.

Art Project

Friday, July 10th, 2009

The girls and I had fun making an art project today. I wanted to teach them their address and it ending up with me teaching about earth. I created maps to show them our precise address down to our earthly existance. We cut and colored the following:

1)Earth, Sun, and Stars
(I forgot about our continent)
2)United States of America and a picture of the flag
3)Beautiful State of Michigan
3)Map of our city which included a picture of what street signs look like
4)Our house (number and address)

They ran around the house saying United States of America and Michign.

Kiss of Death

Wednesday July 1st, 2009

Little D, little C, and I planted our first letterbox. If you are interested in finding it go to www.atlasquest.com or www.letterboxing.org and search in Lansing, MI for "Kiss of Death". I had Z search for it to make sure the clues were useful and he was able to find it and gave me more clever clues to add. I am so excited to take my hobby to the placer level. I love searching but planting will be rewarding also.

July 8th, 2009
We checked on our letterbox today and we had a finder. Dansville Diva's were the first finders of our box. Below is the current list of finders for our box.

U.P. Michigan Vacation
Saturday, June 13th, 2009

We left the house at 10:00 a.m. with the kids in tow. We packed things to keep the kids occupied during the long road trip. Such as a DVD player (courtesy of my friend Michelle), coloring books, laptop, sudoku puzzles, books, and cell phones for texting or playing games. What would we do with out technology? Do you remember when we didn’t have to wear seat belts and the only games we played on road trips were games like slug bug. Thanks to technology the kids are quiet and the ride is peaceful. The drive to St. Ignace is approximately 239 miles and 4 hours.

We stopped in Clare at the Michigan Welcome Center for a break and visited our favorite friends, the Michigan Department of Transportation (DIT) Employee Memorial iron construction workers. We were back on the road at 12:30 p.m. and headed towards the Mackinaw bridge. We arrived at the bridge at 2:00 p.m. “watch out yuppers here comes the trolls yah ay, give me a pastie (pass tee) and some fudge”.

For lunch ate at “The Mystery Spot” in St. Ignace off US 2 Exit 344 B. We enjoyed experiencing the optical illusions, putt putt golf, and the maze. Z, little D, and big D all got a hole in one. We left at 6:00 p.m. to drive to Munising. Munising is about 3 hours and 119 minutes away from St. Ignace.

We stopped at a scenic park along during our gorgeous drive west on US 2 along Michigan’s lakeshore and finally arrived in Manistique at around 8pm.

We had dinner at the coolest Big Boy (or Big Bills as the girls like to call it) I have ever seen. It was located across the street from a lighthouse on Michigan’s lakeshore. Before eating the kids and I played “lines and dots” game like we traditionally do. We left Manistique around 9pm to drive to Munising.

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

Finally, we arrived at the Super 8 in Munising around 10 pm. We reserved room #114 and went straight to the hot tub, and then to sleep. After a good breakfast and nights sleep were ready to explore Musing Letterbox style.

The first letterbox was at Wagner falls. We found our first hitchhiker (named “lil’ Birdie”) in this box. A hitchhiker is a mini journal that travels to a different letterbox location and sometimes they end up in different states. We took it with us to relocate in Copper Harbor.

Next we searched for the “Valley Spur” letterbox. It began by finding trail “c”. We had to fight army of mosquitos. Big D flagged a towel, little D sprayed Listerine, and Z had the bug spray but not much worked. It was pretty miserable.

Little D’s End of the Year Party

Today was little D’s end of the school year party. In lieu of lunch she celebrated with pizza and cupcakes at school. I purchased a congratulations balloon and a card that said “congrats on graduating from kindergarten”. The kids signed autograph books that I put together to use as a yearbook and they also signed t-shirts that they made for the last field trip. They had pizza and juice inside and then went outside for cupcakes. Mrs. G got some really nice gifts included a gift certificate to “The Teacher Store” that many moms made donations too. The kids were really excited for school to dismiss tomorrow at 11:30am to officially start summer vacation.

Misc. Pics

We took many different types of pictures during the month of June which included a picture of Andrew, oops a girl, Drucilla to later be called Drew turtle. Since we really don’t know the sex of the turtle for sure he/she has a boy and a girl name. Z found Drew at one of our long walks along the river walk through Hawk Island. I love my walking group ladies. We certainately are troopers to take 8 kids on bikes with us. We left at home at 1pm and got back around 5pm
