Little D had her school Halloween party today. She came to school dressed as "Thing 3" but didn't like it. She was sad because her friend Dani was dressed as a pretty witch. Since, I forgot my camera I ran home and picked up her snow princess Halloween costume. She is one lucky girl that I don't work so I can do things like that for her. She was much happier in the snow princess outfit. The kids paraded through the school and ended up in the cafeteria to do a mini dance performance. I am thrilled that Big D and I chose the Performing and Visual Art Magnet school for her. It is pure joy to see her perform. I always get a little teary eyed watching her. I am looking forward to the Holiday performance in December.

Taco Bill and Big Bill

Big D has a very good friend/mentor named Bill that he Blacksmiths with. The girls have taken a liking to him. Little D likes him so much that she now calls
Taco Bell-Taco Bill and Big Boy - Big Bills. It puts a smile on our face everytime.

Little C's School Halloween Party

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

It was little C's school Halloween party today. She dressed up as "Thing 1" from Dr. Suess' Cat in the Hat but for some reason she didn't think the kids liked her costume. I assured her she looked GREAT. After a lot of compliments on her costume she felt better. The class made treat baskets, photo frames, and played Halloween Bingo with candy. They marched in a parade through the school to show off their costumes. It was a wonderful party. I brought some pretty orange roses and balloons for the class. I also made chocolate covered marshmallows. They didn't look pretty but they tasted GREAT. I don't think I will make them again. I hate melting chocolate. It is a pain in the butt. I shared the pictures that I took of the kids with Mrs. B and she left me the following comment: "Cute pics! Looks like she had a good time! Thanks for all your help! I thought it went really well and the kids really enjoyed themselves."

Dance 4 a Cure

October 29th, 2009

We attended Pleasant View's "Dance for a Cure" today. Mrs. Brooks the dance teacher developed this fundraiser in order to raise money towards Breast Cancer research and survivor programs at Sparrow. Mrs. Brooks is very passionate for the event because a close relative of hers recently lost the battle against cancer. The spaghetti dinner and Pleasant View's very own dance performers raised $1600.00 to donate to the cause. After the performance survivors were invited to take a center piece, balloons, and a flower home. I explained what breast cancer was to the girls and told them that most of the people in the room tonight had a friend or a family member that had an ouchie just like mom had years ago. The girls often refer to the pink ribbon as "Mommy's bow". Pleasant View moms and staff did a awesome job creating a successful event. The room decorations, dinner, and performance was extraordinarily uplifting.

Congratulations

Downtown Marshall and Turkeyville

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Today, I went to Marshall with my mom and friend (B) to look at scarecrows from the scarecrow festival. We walked downtown and went into the shops and then had lunch at a local diner. After lunch I showed my mom and B where the Temple of Love letterbox was. I found this box last summer. Then, B and I had fun throwing leaves at each other while my mom took our picture at Brooks Memorial Fountain Park.

On our way home B and I stopped at Cornwells in Turkeyville. We did a little shopping and then took pictures of the animals and grounds. While we were taking pictures of the turkey's behind the fence a wondering turkey snuck up on us. He scared the you know what out of us. We weren't expecting a sneak attack. We were about half way home when I realized I stepped in turkey poo. Yuck. Stinky! It's always and adventure when I go out with B. Scary attacking Turkey's , Turkey Poo.

Country Mill

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

It's pumpkin time again. We went to Country Mill in Charlotte to pick pumpkins today. We waited too long this year to pick pumpkins because there weren't very many left and the ones that were there were either smashed, too little, or too green. We managed to find five decent pumpkins for carving.

After picking our pumpkins we headed back towards the store but made a few stops on the way. We stopped at the pond to look at the beautiful scenery. The pond had a huge ugly catfish in it that caught our attention. Big D took an awesome picture of me and the kids on a bench next to the pond and while he was taking the picture I grabbed Z and planted a huge kiss on his lovely cheek. He replied " MoooooM.!!!!" and was so discussed. TEENAGERS...GEEZ! Then, we hit the apple orchard and picked a couple apples to enjoy during our walk. Little C was chowing on two different kinds of apples one for each hand.

Next Big D said she wanted to go to the corn patch (i.e. corn maze). She was getting confused between pumpkin patch and corn maze. We picked corn cobs up from the grown while searching our way through the maze. I like to save them and use them for decoration on my kitchen table and the girls saved them to feed to the goats. Z had other plans for the corn. He picked the kernels off the cob and tossed them at me. I think he was trying to get back at me for the kiss. Little D didn't have any success in finding the end of the maze so luckily, little C led us out. The corn maze ticket collector took a family picture at the end of the maze.

Finally, we paid for our pumpkins and bought the most delicious buttermilk donuts for our trip home. The pumpkin patch is my favorite family outing.

7th Anniversary

Saturday, October 23th, 2009

For our anniversay we went to EMU’s Historic Preservation Program 30th Anniversary Party at at the Halle Library. After the party we went to Ann Arbor's Palio Palio italian restuarant for dinner.

We had an after dinner drink at Circus Bar and Billiards to watch Kareoke. Some people really need to get off the stage. I am so happy to be married to my best friend for 7 years today. Below are some wonderful Anniversary messages that we recieved.

"Hope you two had a great day!"

"Happy Anniversary you guys. Seven years?! I remember the day quite well. You guys looked so good. Good times, good times."

You picked a good guy mommy

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

I was talking with the kids this morning about getting married because Big D and I's anniversary is this Sunday. I told the girls they had to wait until they grow up and find a good guy. Little C replies "You picked a good guy mommy" and that she will have to find a ".....guy that listens to Jesus and does the right thing" AWESOME!!

Fire Safety Day

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Today was fire safety day at little C's school. The Lansing fire department did an awesome job explaining how to use the equipment on the truck. Then, to our surprise, they activated a fire extinguisher. I have never actually seen a fire extinguisher be sprayed. The kids and myself were impressed. After the demonstration outside we went inside, the firemen had a few fire safety tips .

For example:

- don't be afraid of the firemen (he dressed up in his gear and explained how the gear, mask, microphone, and breathing noises could be scary)
- Get Out! he asked the kids "What if you forgot your favorite toy? Do you go back into the house?
- STOP DROP and ROLL
- Don't hide in your closet or under your bed because you can't hide from fire.
- Crawl out of the house and check to see if the door is warm before you open it.

I am very appreciative that the Lansing fire department took time out of their day to teach our children.

Eaton Rapids in the Fall

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Here is just one of the pictures that I shot with Becky of Eaton Rapids , Michigan on a gorgeous fall day. To view more photos please visit my facebook page. It was a warm, beautiful, sunny day doing what I love to do the most, it couldn't get better than that. Too, bad I fell out of a tree while Becky was taking my picture. Luckily, I didn't brake anything. It was one of the funniest things I did this year.

Wallis Fundraiser Event

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

Last year I met the most funny and godly person that I have ever known. Rebecca and I met at a mom's group called MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers). Rebecca serve as a table leader and I as an assistant table leader. We met at a DGL (Discussion Group Leader) meeting. We clicked right away. I felt as if I had known her all my life. We had something big in common. We both suffered the results of serious illnesses. She was diagnosed with L.A.M (rare lung disease where fluid builds in the lungs) a couple years before I was diagnosed with breast cancer. We understood each other in a very real way. We often wish we had met years ago so we could have helped one another get through the illnesses.

Unfortunately, Rebecca lost her battle with LAM on October 2nd, 2009 a few days before her 31st birthday. I will never forget the day I heard the news. I was riding an exercise bike and a friend called to let me know that she had passed. I was devastated and couldn't catch my breath and immediately got off the bike. I went home and isolated myself the whole day.
At one point my 4 year old asked me if I would be crying all day. Fortunately, when my family and friends heard of the news they sent me many words of encouragement such as:

"I looked at pictures of her and her family with the kids. It helped my kids to understand why I was sad."
"I'm really sorry to hear about your friend"
"Sorry to hear this sad news. My thoughts are with you."
"I'm praying for you too... I know she was a close, dear friend to you. Let me know if there is anything I can do. God is with you today!
"You are such a great friend and prayer warrior. Please be at Peace knowing that Rebecca loved you and how much you mean to her family. I would consider it an honor to have you pulling for me the way you have with Rebecca. Will continue to pray for you today."
"Praying for you as you grieve for your friend. Please let me know how I can help"
"I am thinking of you today!"
"I am so sorry. I am hear however i can be for you."
"So sorry. God bless everyone who's life she touched as they wait for Christ's return and we can all be together again."
" I think she really knows how much you cared. You are a very caring friend and I am sure she felt reassured knowing you cared during her last moments."

I wish I had one more day, one more hour, and one more minute to spend with Rebecca to tell her how much I cared!

Rebecca was in and out of the hospital many times and eventually ended up at Mayo in MN. My MOPS group and I decided to help her and her family by raising money to put towards her medial bills. I immediately offered to be the coordinator of the event. Remembering how difficult it is to get out from under medical bills I didn't want her and her family to have that burden on top of everything else. Below is the information on the fundraiser.

Rebecca and I talked about how we would celebrate this event when she came home from the hospital. The event was a bit difficult for me because she wasn't there in body however, I know she was there in spirit. Our goal was to raise $7,000.00 to put towards the private plane she had to take from Ingham Regional Medial Center to Mayo in MN. In a conversation Rebecca had she mentioned that the plane ride was going to be $7,000.00. The fundraiser was a huge success and the team raised $7,119.26 for the Wallis Family medial and funeral expenses. I was honored to present a check to Rebecca's husband on November 9th, 2009.

During the process of getting exposure for the fundriaser the Lansing State Journal wrote the following article.

Wallis remembered by many with great love

By MARY JO WHITE
mjwhite@lsj.com

EATON RAPIDS - Any other year Rebecca Wallis' family and friends would have celebrated her birthday Oct. 12.This year, though, they're celebrating the beauty of her life: 30 years of faith, caring and love that ended after a long struggle with a little-known respiratory disease Oct. 2 in a hospital in Minnesota.

"Funny how after you lose someone you loved, every song you hear seems to grab ahold of your heart and squeeze out memories," her husband, Brett Wallis of Eaton Rapids, wrote on his Facebook page.

Those memories, as well as those of his children, 7-year-old Connor and 4-year-old Emily, are helping sustain him. So are the efforts of the local community to help lift the family's financial burden, one of which occurred last Sunday at Trinity Church in Lansing, the Wallises' spiritual home. The event, sponsored by Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS), featured a hot dog roast, a kiddie carnival and a silent auction. It raised over $5,600, all of which will go to help the Wallis family with medical bills.About 50 people volunteered for the event and sponsors for the auction ranged from the Eaton Rapids Photography Club to Preuss Pets, the Harrison Roadhouse and Nuthouse Sports Grill. A dangerous disease It was several years ago that Rebecca first experienced symptoms of Lymphangioleiomyomatosis, otherwise known as LAM, a degenerative genetic disease in which cysts invade the lungs and the lymphatic system. If they rupture, fluid leaks out. Eventually victims have trouble breathing as their lung capacity diminishes. There is no cure yet. LAM research is basically in its infancy, with the involvement of a particular gene discovered only in 1998. The area in Rebecca's chest between the chest wall and her lung would fill up and have to be drained, and eventually she wound up at the Mayo Clinic. She was mostly in the hospital from late last May until her death, according to Brett Wallis, who has been on unpaid leave from his job for close to three months during Rebecca's illness. The coordinator for the fundraiser was Big C, whose 4-year-old daughter, little C, is close to Rebecca's 4 year old daughter and who says she's never done anything like this before. She took on the task because of Rebecca, whom she calls a faith-filled person able to think of others even during her own difficult struggle."She was able to put a smile on other people's faces," Big C said. "I would walk in to cheer her up (in the hospital) and would walk out with a smile on my face. She was the most Godly person I knew." A grace-filled life" Rebecca's attitude was the culmination of a life spent serving others. Her own children, of course, were her primary focus. But she also was a dedicated MOPS "table leader" at Trinity Church. And she was a substitute teacher in several Eaton Rapids schools. Her younger sister, Michelle S. of Stevensville, Mich., says she was "always motherly.""She always wanted to help me out, encourage me," Michelle said Even in
the hospital, Rebecca cared for others. Michelle tells the story of how her sister, when she was told to walk the halls as part of her treatment, befriended an older female patient, talking and praying with her "Even after she had to stay in bed, she used the nurses to communicate with the woman," Michelle said."She was never one to think 'poor me'."It's not too late to donate to the Wallis family. Checks can be written to Trinity Church, 3355 Dunkel Rd., Lansing, MI 48842, with Attn.: MOPS on the memo line. For more information on LAM, log on to www.thelamfoundation.org.

Rebecca will be missed terribly. I wish I had one more day, one more hour, and one more minute to spend with Rebecca to tell her how much I cared! I know that she is with the lord and is experiencing no more pain and no more tears. Someday I will see her again in Heaven.

I just can't figure out where she come up with this stuff. Thats my story and I am stickin to it.

Hearts at Home conference

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

I attended the 2009 Great Lakes Hearts at Home conference (Real Moms, Real Lives, and Real Stories) at the Amway Grand in Grand Rapids with a few MOPS friends this weekend.

http://www.hearts-at-home.org says.....
Hearts at Home is a Christ-centered organization that encourages, educates, and equips women in the profession of motherhood. Hearts offers various resources, including conferences, events, trade books, a website, an online newsletter, and a radio program to encourage mothers. The goal of all resources is to provide encouragement, personal growth opportunities, new ideas, fresh perspective, and renewed vision for the vital role of mother.

There were many talented speakers (Jill Savage, Kevin Lehman, Karen Ehman ) that spoke on an array of topics such as homeschooling, organizing, cooking, and discipline. The MOPS moms and I took the opportunity to refresh and rejuvinate ourselves by doing the workshops, relaxing in the hot tub, and dinning out for the evening. It was wonderful to have quality girl time that also uplifted your spirit to the joys of motherhood.

It was an added bonus that the Art Prize was also going on this weekend. I admired the many different artwork displays around town.

http://www.artprize.org
At ArtPrize, any artist—from established to emerging—has the chance to show work.
ArtPrize exists to reboot the conversation between artists and audiences on a grand scale.

I am planning to bring Big D and the kids to the event next year. I am looking forward to having more time to view and appreciate the art. Art Prize is a MUST see event.
